Meine lieben Kinder 26.2. 1941

Gestern und Vorgestern trafen Brief(e) vom 8. I. , 15. I und heute euer Telegramm ein, womit wir uns wie immer sehr freuten, besonders mit deinem ausführlichen Brief, l. Mitzi, und entnahm ich , dass sich Martin im Aufstehen noch nicht gebessert hat; aber das hat er nicht von seinem Vater und dass er dir im Haushalt hilft, ist nichts mehr wie recht und billig und weiß auch, dass er dies gerne tut, wie ich es auch bei meiner l. Frau selig G(ross) G(erau) gethan. An der Aufnahme Eures Wohnzimmers kann ich mir schon vorstellen, dass es nett und gemütlich bei euch sein muss; auch alle übrigen Bildchen sind sehr schön und freuten uns alle damit. Nun wollen wir hoffen , dass wir uns bald von allem überzeugen können. Am Samstag erhielten die Mitteilung, dass die Bürgschaft in Ordnung geht (die A(merican) L(ine) Bescheinigung worauf euch gleich kabelte und heute nach 4 Tagen traf schon Euer Telegramm ein. Wi hieraus ersehe, habt Ihr schon 2 Plätze bezahlt, aber, wann wir dieselben bekommen können, ist noch sehr ungewiss. Ich ging heute früh mit dem Telegramm gleich zur Hapag und sagte mir der Direktor „hoffentlich geht es Ihnen nicht wie den anderen Herren, die haben alle noch keine Nachricht von Lissabon“ und meint über Russland würde es nicht so lange dauern , bis man fahren könnte. „Aber nachdem Ihr jetzt über Lissabon gebucht habt, wird man es doch nicht mehr umbuchen , da Ihr sonst soviel an dem eingezahlten Geld verlieren würdet.“

Die Schwägerin von Julius Kahn (das ist Meta Kahn) schrieb, dass es ihr mit grosser Mühe gelungen sei, noch 2 Schiffsplätze über Lissabon für Kahns zu bekommen. Die Schwägerin wohnt in NY, aber Karl wird auch im Bilde sein, wie ihr dies gelungen ist: weshalb euch gleich mit ihm in Verbindung setzt. Kahns hoffen im Mai zu fahren, aber an welchem Tag wissen sie auch noch nicht. Die Adresse von Frau Kahn ist: Meta Kahn c/o O/C?resmann 115 Central Park NY im Falle du dich direct mit ihr in Verbindung setzen willst. Carls Adresse ist 7427 N. Clarkstr: die werdet ihr wohl wissen. Ich habe mit Ulius Kahn gesprochen und sagte er, dass es gut wäre, wenn du nach St(gart) schreiben würdest, dass du am 21.XI. . geheiratet hast und was Mitzi verdient, die evtl. noch mitbürgen könnte.

My dear children,

Yesterday and the day before that we got your letters from Jan 8 and 15, and also a telegram; as always, we were very happy. I especially liked your detailed letter, dear Mitzi; I see that Martin still has a hard time with getting up…That he does not have from his father; and that he helps with the chores is right so; I know he also likes to do so, just like I used to do with my dear wife in Gross Gerau. From the picture of your living room I can tell how nice it is; all the other pictures are beautiful and made us very happy. Now we are hoping that we can see all that in person, soon. On Saturday we were told that the sponsorship is alright, it is stamped by the American Line; I immediately sent you a cable and today, just four days thereafter we have already received your telegram. As I can tell, you have already paid for two seats, but when these arrive here nobody knows. This morning I went right away with the telegram to Hapag where the director told me: ”hopefully it will not happen to you like with the other men who still don’t have any news from Lisbon, and he also felt via Russia it would go faster, until one could leave. But since you had booked via Lisbon, it won’t be rebooked, because it would mean a great loss of money”.

The sister-in-law of Julius Kahn (Meta Kahn) wrote that it was very difficult for her to get two seats on the ship for the Kahns via Lisbon.
