Letter from Johanna Kossmann, Hede Marx, Emil Marx

Gross-Gerau 1 August 1936

Lieber Martin!

Oppenheimers, (also Liesel) ziehen am 1. Nov in Sttgart bestellt.

Was meinst Du was Trude Kahn in ??? Henschel u.

Vater

Gross Gerau, August 1, 1936

Dear Martin. Today is Shabbos. I was in the synagogue and thought that there might be a letter from you there, but it is surely still too early. We are awaiting your first report. How did you like New York? We're thinking you left for Chicago today.

Thanks be to God, everything is in good order here, one day passes quiet and calm like the next. We have bad harvest weather, nothing but rain. Since you left it's so quiet in the house, I keep thinking you'll come to eat, and if we have something that's to your liking, then I want to bring it up.

Today we had the first apples and yesterday plum cake, all fruit from the garden. The peaches are so fine this year, and we have more than enough. Listen, father fasted for a the whole day on Tisha B'av and Hede for a half-day. Otherwise nothing has happened here. The Oppenheimers (including Liesel) are moving to Frankfurt on the first of October, and rented a place in Jahnstrasse, so there isn't much in the way of society left here. Today around noon Aunt Hans called, thinking we already had a letter from you. Karl Kahn will also be home soon. The business is being sold. On Monday Aunt Selma is going to Hamburg and then Änne will go back with her before her departure. Sally Nachmann must go to Stuttgart on the 18th of November. Here at home everything is well, and at Uncle Salomon's as well - the important thing is that we're healthy and hope the same is true for you dear Martin. Don't forget to write regularly, this is all we have from you anymore.

With heartfelt greetings, your Johanna Kossmann.

Dear Martin. I hope you're well, I can say that I am. Have you already settled in? What do you think of Trude Kahn marrying Herr Rosenthal on the 16th of August in Frankfurt (she must)? Yesterday she wrote me saying I should visit her sometime soon. Next Sunday I intend to go. Trude [Marxsohn?] will come with. These days I only ever get together with Trude, otherwise there is nobody. Today Margot Koslovsky has her wedding at the Krone. The day before yesterday Herr Hartogsohn left. He brought your camera. Yesterday Herr Nussbaum was at the Oppenheimers one last time, and he was surprised you hadn't written him. I still haven't gone with the Nachmanns. Henschel and Ropertz has also been bought by Mann. Did you talk to anyone from here in New York? Give everyone my greetings and a big hug and kiss from your sister Hede.

Dear Martin, I hope that you and all our loved ones in Chicago are well, which is the case among us. You can I'm sure imagine that for us the wait for the first news from you is growing long, and I expect that you'll write us regularly every week. For you, a new life and new pursuits are just starting, and you'll always have material for letters. Yesterday I sold 170 sacks of flour in Darmstadt to Laun, Bangersch, Korndörfer, Kappes, Canenzer but right now the rye as well as the wheat flour are scarce so we may be without flour for eight days. The harvest is greatly delayed due to the bad weather. For today kind greetings to you and Max and Käthchen [?] from your father.
