Firmenbriefkopf 7. Juli 1937

Lieber Martin!

Aug. in Stgt. bestellt.

Okt. nach U.S.A. Kahns rüsten feste. Hast Du m. Karte erhalten?

Vater.

July 7th, 1937

Dear Martin,

I returned home on Friday and found everybody doing well; Father and Hede look great; the house is spic and span, Hede kept everything in best shape. There was a great surprise for me: Rosel has been here since Wednesday and stayed until Sunday evening, Sigmund came on Saturday; it was very nice and we played skat. Not much had happened here, thank God, everything is as it used to be and we are glad about that. It was very hard to say goodbye to my family, but I am happy to be back at my work; I have already canned the cherries which was not so great because of the heat. At this point we also have blackberries, sour cherries and next peaches – fruit is not cheap.

We have not had the chance to catch up with the news here, I only know that Herr Löwy (Strauss) is on the boat. Goldberger must report in Stuttgart on August 2nd.

We are expecting Tante Hans and Uncle Josef for yahrzeit. Father called Auntie last week, this will do her good as a distraction helps all. Hope she will stay for a while. I can barely believe that Father can influence the various reports; his memory is still pretty good. He is again busy with the accounts; it is good when men have work to do.

You had asked for Millly?’s address: she is currently traveling. Heard nice stories from her, she lives in A. Hope you are having fun during the holidays in the cabin, enjoy your free time! Tell me, do you have proper beds there, or do you sleep on cots?

Next week it will already be 1 year that you are away, everything feels like you have just left yesterday.

Willi Siegel and his wife got their visa; they want to leave for the U.S.A. on Oct 2. The Kahns are getting ready. Have you received my card? Warm greetings and stay healthy, your Johanna Kossmann. We go to Nierstein on Sunday, then that will be the end of it. Aunt Selma celebrated her 50th birthday last week, they went to Herrenalb.

Dear Martin,

Happy to hear your good news and thank God, we are doing well also. I got used to being lazy again pretty quickly around here. My mid-year statements are done. No more debts from clients. No more at the bank and nothing with Frau K, I paid all my debt to Frau K down to the remaining 1 thousand. Currently, I have 14.4k from clients in the box. The outstanding payments are coming in slowly but quite surely. I had spent much time trying to get them, which kept me busy. Today I went to Mainz, to the Land Registry office about putting the two basic debt letters of Adolf Reinheimer of Bischofsheim onto my name, and at the same time I visited the Hamburg Oppenheimers who will return home on Saturday. With respect to Aunt Hannchen’s inheritance matter I immediately need the following addresses from you or, if you do not know, ask Uncle Max or Aunt Sophie:

1) Eduard Rüb’s three daughters

2) Martha Schaffner / Herbert Schaffner / Flora Schaffner’s children

3) Tynchen Fuhrmann Louisville; if you don’t have it, I can find out from Nierstein.

Dear Hede has gone out tonight but sends her greetings. Say hello to Uncle Max and Aunt Käthchen from me and tell them that both of their inheritances will go to the Nauheimer children, as per their wishes. I think this will be completed in 5-6 weeks. For today, a warm kiss from your Father.
