Firmenbriefkopf FfM 7. Mai 1939

Lieber Martin

Dein Bf.

Dear Martin,

Your letter No. 137 arrived yesterday and I can see you had a great birthday party for Justin. I send him my congratulations after the fact and wish that next year his parents can be with him at his next party.

As you wrote, Job and Salli want to sell lamps that they would import from Belgium. I believe they would get these through their cousin Stern from Holland; Job spent 8 days with him on his trip to the USA. If this were to work out, be careful and let them show you the original bills, so that they do not charge you extra, or take a provision for the delivery for themselves; for I can imagine anything when it comes to Salli. Especially, do not give up your job until you can be sure that it is well worth it. And Else is even more dangerous.

I am not sure whether you’ve heard the new law: Jews are no longer allowed to live in Aryan houses, only in Jewish ones, and there are not that many left. This will have terrible consequences. It would be great if we could get out now, and stay for the transition in another country. But it costs a lot and that money has to be first secured.

Talk to Max Herz and Udo and tell each of them that they should lend me 3000 dollars for this purpose. Or do you think I should ask them directly? In that case I would need Udo’s address. Talk to Justin’s parents once more, whether they could do something for us and let them know that our stay is already covered. If there is absolutely no chance to go to Belgium, then an acquaintance of Aunt Hilda from B. has a possibility to go to Cuba. But I would prefer Belgium. Job promised to me to speak to Max Herz, but I believe Else did not let him. So, look after that you can get that money from somewhere as a loan. Hoping for good news, warm greetings and kisses from you father.
