Lieber Martin!
Endlich erhielt ich von dir, l. Martin, Nachricht; der erste Brief kam am Freitag (Nr. 18) und Samstag Nr. 19; aber dies ist sicher durch den Steik der amerik. Schiffe (verurssacht); Kahn´s haben jetzt auch von Karl Briefe, aber deine Karte hat nicht erhalten, denn die Nachricht von Hirsch auf Schiff hat erwähnt; wir geben die Adr. bei. Am Mittwoch besuchte ich Erna Krämer, haben uns gut unterhalten und viel von Dir. Sie kann noch nicht hinüber kommen, die Eltern allein zu lassen, sei eine grosse Verantwortung; habe sie nochmals mit den Eltern eingeladen.
Von Onkel Jacob haben uns auch unterhalten; der Mann hat kein Glück. Margot versteht sich gar nicht mit ihrer Mutter.
Glaube, dass es nicht so leicht für Dich war, Nachtarbeit zu liefern; man gewöhnt sich an alles. Du scheinst eine nette Wirtin zu haben, die so gut für Dich sorgt; dies beruhigt uns ein bischen. Dein Geburtstag hast wenigstens nett gefeiert und hoffe, dass Confekt gut gemundet hat oder kam es gebröckelt an? Soll ich Dir bei nächster Gelegenheit wieder Confect mitgeben? Es ist immer schwer, die verschiedenen Sachen mitzugeben, da jeder mit Leica etc. p. p. belastet ist.
Du fragst, Ruth soll schreiben. Du bist ad acta gelegt, denn mit Karl K(ahn) hatte sie zuletzt grosse Freundschaft, er lässt sie nachkommen, wurde erzählt. Margot ist nicht mehr hier, hat ausgespielt! Friedel ist gesund. Paul Oppenheimers sind am 15. Dez. in Stuttgt. bestellt. Neues giebt es bei uns gar nicht.
Heute mittag fahren nach Nierstein. Job fährt uns bis zur Fähre. Zu Onkel Salmons Geburtstag sind zum Kaffee eingeladen und dann nach Tisch - Onkel Alex kommt auch; wird Familie F. noch bis kurz vor den Feiertagen da bleiben. Berthel ist über Samstag bei Kurt in Amsterdam, es gibt über den Fall immer Aufregungen; ich wünschte ihm, dass endlich Fuss fassen könnte.
Hier wird erzählt, Aug. Hirsch hätte schon ein Geschäft in Chicago angefangen, sicher sind sie gemütlich eingerichtet, haben doch so vieles modernes? mitgenommen.
Hede ist seit Freitag zurück, war auch in Mannheim. Siegf. und Berthel Oppenheimer, deine Cousine gehen im Frühjahr nach Buenes – Aires. Herr O(ppenheimer?) hat gelernt Pralinée (zu) machen und jetzt Mühlen-Chemie; dies lernt er in Darmstadt, fährt jeden Tag dorthin. (Rückwärtsverweis auf Mühlen-Chemie mit Pfeilen) dies lernt er bei Dr. Berliner, Eberstadter Villenkolonie, noch 4 Wochen bleibt er noch da und geht dann 2 Mt. in verschiedene Mühlen in deren Laboratorium; ich finde das fein.
Der Junge wird im Februar Barmitzvah und dann gehen weg.

Dear Martin,
Finally I received from you, dear Martin, some news. The first letter came on Friday (number 18) and on Saturday, number 19, but this is surely a result of the American shipping strike. Kahns have also now received letters from Karl, but not yet your card, as the news from Hirsch on the ship had mentioned. We'll include the address. On Wednesday, I visited Erna Krämer, we had a good conversation and spoke a lot about you. She still can't head over and leave her parents alone. It's a big responsibility; I invited her back with her parents. We spoke about Uncle Jacob as well, the man has no luck. Margot doesn't get along with her mother.
I imagine it wasn't so easy for you to take on night shifts; one gets used to anything. You seem to have a nice landlady who looks after you well, this is reassuring to us. At least you had a nice birthday celebration and I hope the confections tasted good, or did it arrive crumbled? Should I send confections again at the next opportunity? It's always difficult, getting couriers for all the various things, since everyone is getting stuck with a Leica, etc. You asked that Ruth should write. You've been shelved, as Karl Kahn and she have struck up a great friendship recently; it is said, he's going to send for her. Margot isn't here anymore, it's played out. Friedel is healthy. Paul Oppenheimers are to head to Stuttgart on December 15th. Nothing new from us.
Midday today we'll drive to Nierstein. Job will drive us to the ferry. We're invited for Uncle Salomon's birthday for coffee and then dessert. Uncle Alex is also coming, the F. family will stay there until shortly before the holidays. Berthel is staying with Curt in Amsterdam over Saturday. There is always something with that one, I wish for him that he could finally get a foothold. Here people are saying that August Hirsch has already opened a business in Chicago, surely they are comfortably equipped, they really took so many modern pieces. Hede is back since Friday, she was also in Mannheim. Siegfried and Berthel Oppenheimer, your cousins, are going to Buenos Aires in the spring. Herr Oppenheimer learned to make praline, and now he's studying flour chemistry in Darmstadt, he goes there every day. He's studying under Dr. Berliner, Eberstadter Villenkolonie. He'll stay another 4 weeks, and then goes for 2 months to various mills to works in their labs. I think that's great. The son will be bar mitzvahed in February, and then they leave.
