Firmenbriefkopf Nr. 38

My dear Martin.

Dein Bf. vom 15.

March 29, 1937

My dear Martin,

On Good Friday, the 26th we have received your letter of the 15th, unopened, with a stamp from the 16th. Happy to hear you are healthy, I can say the same about us. In my last letter I asked you about an Affidavit; but as I had found out in the meantime, it is no longer needed. I will go to the district office first thing and ask about it. As I had heard, one can buy a return ticket, and pay for room and board at a German hotel for 16 days; but I think it would be better if I postponed my trip by a few months, until you can better use me and perhaps earn a little more as well.

You can write me about what you want me to bring you for your birthday. I have already bought a Leica (configured in feet) and hope you’ll like it. So let me know what else you would like to get; whether I can fulfill all your wishes is of course another question!

Yesterday we had the Niersteiners for lunch and after coffee we drove to Schumann in Frankfurt and then back to us for dinner. It was very nice and gemütlich. After dinner we chatted for a while and then around 10 they left. They had received a letter from Louisville where Ernst has already been promoted. He now has a car park with 25 staff, and to his delight, his pay rose by 2 dollars; he makes 17 dollars now. They sent several pictures and as we can tell: all of them lost weight, as Ernst also had mentioned, they work more and eat less than here in Germany, but the little Lotte seems to have grown and become stronger.

The S. Marx family and staff (?) were in Mainz yesterday. Hope you have had a chance to speak with Salli in detail and receive your things. Hopefully the shirts and shoes fit and you like the ring; please say hello to Salli and his relatives from me! The Holidays have long passed and it is still so cold around here; until now no seeds have been sown; normally around this time that would have already been done; Curt swims now on the high seas and I wonder where he lands. Max Guthmann’s business, for which Uncle Max had been traveling, has now also become Aryan; but he can still travel on its behalf – hopefully for a long time, otherwise what will become of those two? Say hello to all the relatives and acquaintances from me, and warm kisses from you Father.

(In the letterhead – upside down) Dear Martin, today only greetings. Father and Hede told you about everything how the Yomtof (Holiday) went; we missed you a lot at Seder, this was sad. Once more heartfelt greetings from Johanna Kossmann.
