Firmenbriefkopf Frankfurt, den 15. Mai (1939)

Lieber Martin.

Herzl. Gruss Johanna Kossmann.

Dear Martin,

As I take it from your letter, you also do not think that we can get to Belgium and so we decided, just like the Gold family that stays with us that we’ll go to Cuba. For Mrs. K you’ll get about 150 dollars through Erich Koch from London, the rest of it should come from her cousin, and about this you should write a strong letter to her. The living expenses would be covered, we hope, by the aid committee in Cuba. Also, you will get a letter from Gold’s daughter Lore in a few days that you have to take care of right away. This week I also spoke to Erich who asked for your bank account information as he would like to pay off his debts to you. he makes good money now in London, so he can now afford this. I promised him to write to him as soon as I have your banking information; please inform me about it as soon as you receive this letter.

The places on the ship can be organized only after we receive the permission to enter. When you are taking care of the visas, ask at the U.S.A. office if, in case Cuba is blocked from here, we can still get in with the same visas via New York, so that we do not waste this money for nothing. If you know any details about this, please let also Lore Gold know immediately.

Hans Strauss from Dreieichenhain has just come from the Sea travel office and said the same. He goes to Hamburg tonight and will ask on my behalf at the Consulate there. As soon as I know something I’ll let you know. Even if the entry were taken care of today, there would be still several months needed, until all paperwork is finished.

Gina wrote that she had an appointment with the Committee and now he thinks one could get a temporary permission for 2-3 months, which of course would not help us. Have you actually received the present from Berthel? I have already asked you about this but still no response. Meanwhile, you will probably have spoken to Salomon and company. Warm greetings and kisses from your father.

Dear Martin,

All day long we are talking about Cuba; it is necessary; we hope at last something will turn out right for us. We want to share house with the Golds over there, as the relationship with them is happy and content and it will stay that way. Right now it is quiet here, although we always have visitors. This week Robert Kramer and wife came over; it was very nice. I should give their greetings to you. He is soon going to England. His wife will go after him, once he got used to the new environment. We laughed a lot. Today we got a letter from Aunt Hans: she is looking for a sponsor for Albert’s wife and children. She cannot bear this crazy life any longer. Can you do something for her? Thursday we go to Mainz; that will be soon over as well. Otherwise we are healthy. Warm greetings from Johanna Kossmann.
