Firmenbriefkopf Gross-Gerau, den 13. August 1938

Lieber Martin

Dear Martin,

Even though I have just written to you 3 days ago, I have to tell you something today: namely, that I would like Hede to go first to America, because once both of you are over there and can earn some money, it would be much easier for you two to afford my stay. There is no future here for Hede. Perhaps she could work as a housekeeper. Even if her affidavit arrived today, it could take a half a year until she could leave as there are so many requests in Stuttgart. Have you spoken to Guttmann’s children?

As I heard from their father, both got a job right away at their sponsors. Erich works in his factory and makes 16 dollars per hour; Hilda works in the office; both sounded quite happy.

Let me know what you think about Hede, as you will have to take care of her; I am 65 years old and one never knows how long I can take care of the two of you; whatever I can, I will do. As Hede would like to add a few words here, I close my letter now with my best wishes and kisses, your Father.

Dear Martin,

Today father spoke with Aunt Hilda and decided to write to you about my future right away. What do you think? I would like to go to a family if possible. Guthmanns packed their things yesterday. I see that I become older every day and father will not be with us forever. My plan is to learn to cook now. Give my greetings to the Herz family and everybody else there. Please let us know what you think about this letter.

Warmest greetings to you, dear Martin, from your sister Hede.
