Nr. 64 Gross-Gerau, d. 4. Oktober 1937

Lieber Martin,

dein Bf.

Kossmann.

Number 64, October 4, 1937

Dear Martin,

We received your letter No. 63 today, and so I want to respond right away. Naturally I am surprised about your changing jobs, and just hope you have found the right one for you; I know you have always liked to take photos. Apparently you did not much like your last job as you never mentioned anything about it; the more I hope that I will learn more about your new work from your letters. Hopefully you have better chances there. What’s the point of your chemistry studies? I can no longer send you a monthly allowance I’m afraid, because our passes have not been renewed. But tomorrow I will go to the exchange and see if I can get another permission there to continue. I will take your letter from today with me so they can see what you are making and that it is not enough.

Julius Strauß left here today for Frankfurt and he was very sad about it. I believe I had already written to you that the money he got for his house (17k) was seized by the taxman as he owed them from 8-9 years ago. As soon as he will have settled all his affairs, he wants to emigrate. You write that we should speak to Frau Schumann which I did in the meantime and she said she would keep everything for her sons.

The mother of Nussbaum passed away about 14 days ago (on Erev Yom Kippur) so you should send him your condolences. Irina said her good-byes on Saturday. She will pack her things on Oct 11. Greetings and kisses for today from your Father.

Dear Martin,

Can you remember, when you were leaving I told you that you would end up working in a photo shop; well, it came true. I am glad you are happy about it and thank God you are so lucky; this time Father did not get upset about your changing jobs: we knew all along that something was not right with the old one. Now that the cabin is finished, what are you doing Sundays? Here it is extreme…and sometimes I have no idea what to do. Aunt Hilda is visiting us since Wednesday and she looks great. Today she went to Mainz. Berthel is expecting her papers. Last Saturday we had three families in the synagogue here to say good-bye to. Your letter goes with the same ship taking the in-laws of Moritz Schott's family emigrating to New York. Irma of Sprendlingen is going on Oct 20 or 24 with the Manhattan.

Your picture is nice, you look good, where are the others? As we heard, Alice who is in New York is moving to live with and take care of the household of Uncle Karl’s wife. By the time you get this letter, probably Julius and Frieda Kahn will have already visited you. We are wondering if they'll come back or stay longer… I am going to see the doctor on Wednesday, for I am not feeling better yet. We are always happy to get a letter from you: it makes our day. Warm greetings to all Joh. Kossmann.
