Herzl. Grüsse Johanna Kossmann

Gross-Gerau, August 23, 1937

Dear Martin,

Your sweet birthday letter arrived exactly on the day, together with the wonderful perfect present that arrived the day before. Thank you so much for both, dear Martin; you have made me very happy. I loved this present much more than all the other things. It looks really elegant and everyone admires it.

Frida and Johanna Kahn, Uncle Salomon, Hanna, Ruth Nachmanns and Betty Dahlerbruch all came over for coffee. We were 10 people. Here are the presents: Father: a suitcase, his picture and stockings; Frau Kossm.: a pair of dark blue gloves that match the coat perfectly; Else: stationary; Job: the fountain pen I am writing this letter with; Uncle S: beautiful handkerchiefs with initials; Hanna and Ruth: eau de cologne; from Bretten: a chocolate cake. Frida Kahn: half a dozen handkerchiefs; Johanna Kahn: stockings. In the evening the youth visited bringing great presents, too.

This morning I received a letter from Hilde Gardi (Meininger) and daughter. Yesterday afternoon Blanka came from Frankfurt, who, with father and siblings is going to emigrate in 4 weeks to J…?, they are going to Argentina. That ends my Frankfurt trips as well. Just now Herr Leopold Kahn has arrived to tell us that Herr Leopold Hirsch of Büttelborn will return home on Wednesday for good. Herr Hartochsohn will get married on Sunday.

Dear Herr Martin,

All is well with us; we are going to move to Frankfurt soon. Warm greetings, Leopold Kahn.

Hede continues:

There is one more thing I have to tell you about, dear Martin. On Wednesday, Father Job drove the old Mohrchen to a stream at 7 o’clock. Friday morning at 6 Mohrchen stood at our door. She came all the way from Bingen to Gerau 60 km – isn’t that something!

Julius Kahn’s family are going to Karl tomorrow. Martha of Alzenau has left today. Herr Löwy does not have a job as of yet. You will talk to the Kahns soon for sure. Now, dear Martin, stay healthy, give my greetings to all and warm greetings and kisses from your Sister Hede.

Dear Martin,

Hede took care of our correspondence today, and could not write anything else; so then just warm greetings and kisses from your Father.

Letterhead:

Dear Martin, Today just a short note: everybody loved the present and I like it as well. We are healthy. Hede told you about everything. We’ll be thinking of you a lot during the Holidays. Warm greetings from Johanna Kossmann.
