Firmenbriefkopf Frankfurt, den 22. Januar 1939

Lieber Martin!

Herzl. Grüsse Johanna Kossmann

Dear Martin,

Hope you are healthy, and praise God, we are, too. Even Mrs Kossmann is well now. Yesterday we went shopping the first time for our new place: a Luminator, a table lamp, 2 lights for the night table and a heating pad for 100-200 Volt; tomorrow we’ll buy curtains, and so, we complete one thing after the other. But all this costs too much money.

We’ll get a gas oven and some furniture. Eventually this will feel like home here, too. Else and Job went to Stuttgart this week and Job leaves next week; he will bring you something from Moll. Else goes with the others in March. This week Uncle Max came here to the English consulate where he got the white cards for himself and Aunt Selma; now they want to have their teeth fixed and then off to England until they can emigrate. All this they managed through their nephew Erich whose boss will offer the affidavit; Aenne and Ernst will support them in England.

We, too, could eventually go to Paris with Jacob’s assistance, if only we could find someone who could support us there. Belgium does not look too good. Have you already talked to the family about this, or have they already said no? Everyone fervently wishes to get out of here, but it isn’t so simple.

Since we moved here, I have played Skat twice and tomorrow we’ll play again. Time we do have for this.

Hope to receive your letter tomorrow. Warm kisses from your father.

Dear Martin,

I feel better now, but I do not feel at home yet, and it is still chaotic here. Everything feels so unkempt here, as we suffered a lot with our nerves. Mr Kaufmann was here this week and said we went through a lot more in the 4 days we spent back home than they, and if the 3 women had not been so strong, everything, including clothes and linen would be lost.

It pains us terribly that we cannot leave, and we have to live in constant worry, while you out there are free. Today Gustav and Lori and Else Siegel received news from the sea that they will arrive the latest on Wednesday, the 5th. Soon we’ll have no friends left here. Klara Mainzer was here yesterday. Moritz is with Heini in Holland and Klara will follow him as soon as she receives permission.

Gretel and husband go to Paris first. On top: as Uncle Alex told us, Margot will get married in February and then Aunt Sophie will go to New York. Uncle Jacob will go later.

Aunt Hans is feeling better, but when Meta dn the kids stay with her, it is too much for her. She has to gain weight, first and foremost.

We assume you have got the presents through Guthmann’s kinder now. As Johanna Kahn told me, Karl has not mentioned anything about that. Do you occasionally see the people from Gerau? Jul Strauss is also there, after all.

Warm greetings Johanna Kossmann
