Firmenbriefkopf Frankfurt, den 9. Juli 1939

Lieber Martin.

Sichel? Hoffentlich gut! Was machen unsere Amerikaner?

Recht herzl. Grüsse Joh. Kossmann.

Dear Martin,

As I take from your last letter, you wish to become self-employed which I am very happy about. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you talked with your current boss about this and asked what sort of capital is needed for this? Perhaps he can also advise you concerning the location; or perhaps he must not know about all this, lest he fires you? Maybe it is better if you just talk with Max Herz or Lee about this first.

Yesterday we got a letter from Ruth who has changed jobs and is now making 35 dollars/week; as she writes it is a great job at an older lady and her son; Hanna also gave up her job; the woman wanted to give her 10 dollars more. Ruth complained that she had not heard anything from you. Her address is: Ruth Schwarz c/o Lindberger 520 W. 139 str. Apt. 45 N. Y. City. The Lindbergers forward her post.

Thursday Mr Wetzler was here. He had lunch and dinner with us which was great. We played “Franz zu Fuss” for we were missing a third person for Skat.

Jacob Gottschall, who lived in Wiesbaden until now, wants to move here and comes tomorrow to find a place. I also think the people from Mainz will come here once more as they are leaving the week after next.

How is the potato salad business of the Sichel family going? Hopefully well! How are our Americans doing? My brother will talk big – Else even bigger!

Greetings to all and warm kisses to you from your father.

Are you not seeing August Hirsch anymore?

July 26 is the Jahrzeit [Anniversary] of your mother’s passing (may she rest in peace).

Dear Martin,

We hope you will be lucky with your idea becoming reality and that it all ends well! We are very upset, for we do not know where to go. We would like to go all together to Belgium. This week we had a lot of excitement because of the flat; we are going crazy thinking that we may have to move again, that would be terrible, what flat, which area? We like the Golds and if needs be, we would like to stay together. We were very happy about the letter from Ruth and Hanne but you must not tell anyone that she makes 35 dollars; she said 30 dollar to Else and Opa, so hold your tongue. As well, Ruth is not going to Chicago, and I have no idea what her mother will do.

On Tuesday we celebrated Aunt Selma’s birthday with strawberry and blueberry cake and the evening with sirloin, potatoes and salad, fruits. We were invited by the Golds. Elsa’s girlfriend is leaving the beginning of August by boot; don’t let her or anyone else ask you any questions.

Do you often see Salomons? They did not like it in Milwaukee, for nobody heard from them about Sally; something must have gone wrong there. Uncle Sal sent a detailed report to Ida Hirsch. She was all this time in Berlin. Warm greetings from Joh. Kossmann.
