Firmenbriefkopf FfM, den 14. II.1939

Lieber Martin!

Recht herzl. Grüsse von Joh. Kossmann.

Dear Martin,

I would have liked to write you earlier, expecting a letter from you every day, but that sadly, has not happened yet. Hopefully tomorrow. Job is going to Holland with his father on Sunday; they’ll stay two weeks with his cousin Stern; He will write to you from there, so then you’ll know everything. We are thank God healthy and hope the same about you.

About our trip to Belgium I cannot tell you anything yet, because the person in question comes back only today. All is extremely difficult and takes for ever. I hope the daughter of Mrs Kossmann comes next week then we can talk face-to-face much better about everything. Everyday many are leaving and can only hope it will soon be our turn as well. Leopold Kahn is getting trained as a nurse in the Gagern hospital, which costs him 50 marks per month. At least they keep him busy this way. There is some negotiation taking place about the house and shop. The Reichsbahn (railway) has been looking at the house this week. Almost all Jewish houses in Gerau have been sold. Most have moved here.

I have paid my income and property tax last week and think that they will lower my taxes, as well as the Reichsfluchtsteuer [tax to be paid by Jews for leaving the Reich].

Aunt Hans left the hospital Karlsruhe on Saturday, but she is still not well. Have you written to her?

Adolf Guckenheimer’s grandchildren are going to England; their grandfather has died in Buchenwald.

Today I have nothing else to tell you, warm kisses from your father.

Dear Martin,

We keep hoping, but nothing is happening; one could despair from it often. Job has said his good-byes, surely his life has become easier in all aspects now. I believe when he is finally in Milwaukee you will use the first Sunday to speak with him. I forgot the name of his ship; you see, my memory is failing on account of the many upsets. Everyone has some issues as a result. As I hear, Ernst opened his business only Feb 10. Hope he is as successful as Änne. Seppel and Selma Löb don’t have a job yet, but Minna and Heini are happy, as Ida wrote this to us from Berlin. Warm greetings from Joh. Kossmann.
