Liebe Mitzi und lieber Martin. 2. XII 40

Inzwischen waren 2 Stunden spazieren.

Dear Mitzi and Dear Martin,

Today I am responding to three letters that arrived all together yesterday, dated Oct 8-14. Hope that meanwhile you received something from me as well and understand the cause of the delay. I am glad to know that your wedding has now taken place and that you are happy together, and I wish you and your in-laws the best and only sunny and happy days for your future. I regret that I could not be at your wedding and hope that Salomon, Max and Selma represented our family well. I would very much enjoy helping you at creating your home, but sadly, I cannot do so. The name of the rabbi sounds so familiar, where was he before?

Meanwhile we went for a two-hours-long walk. I would also like to provide you with some chairs and other things from my household but don’t know how to get these to you. Also glad to hear that you two legally qualify for marriage: this is something new to me. I look forward to reading your wedding report: who attended, what food you had, etc.

Last night we celebrated you with some fellow tenants by opening a few bottles of wine, wishing you a happy future.

Still no word from Aunt Hans: apparently she is in Camp Gurs in the South of France. What was actually wrong with Harry that he had died so suddenly? Please send me the address of Max Herz and Elfriede so I can write to them. Had he actually still have his business? Would that be something for you? Perhaps you could discuss this with Uncle Max. Maybe your father-in-law could help you in this.

Stay healthy and warm kisses to both of you from your father.

Give my greetings also to the in-laws.

Mrs Kossmann:

We would have liked to send you a telegram with our best wishes, but sadly, that was not possible. Best wishes from me as well, and have a wonderful honeymoon! I can hardly believe that you, dear Martin, are a married man. Be helpful and supportive with your wife, after all, this is also of some interest to you when good food appears on the table. Thank you for your good wishes to my birthday; it was one month too early, but well meant.

This year we will not celebrate. We are missing so much and are very sad that Aunt Hans is gone. Father is doing well and has a healthy appetite; as he also wrote, we celebrated your wedding with wine and cake with the neighbors. Father only drank half a glass, but Hede and I enjoyed some more. We would so much like to send you some of our furniture, also some rugs; these would look great in your home.

Surely your wife has her hands full with organizing everything. Or, have you got rid of some of the things already? Do you still have the linen we sent you last year? They are all fine things, with the initials HM, I believe. We look forward to reading your wedding report, which is our way to enjoy life. It turned cold today but the heating functions well.

Warm greetings from Johanna Kossmann.
