[Wenn Du l. Martin in dem ersten Brief etwas besonderes geschrieben hast, dann schreibe nochmal darüber.]

L. Martin heute kam dein Bf. No 2 als erster an, mit dem wir uns alle sehr freueten, allem Aussehen nach, hast du Dich auf dem Schiff gut amüsiert + netten Zeitvertreib gehabt. Eure Kost scheint auch gerade nicht schlecht gewesen zu sein. Die Bildchen sind sehr schön, auch ich bin gut getroffen + danke dir recht herzl. Hoffentlich hast du gute Arbeit gefunden, vielmehr wird dir Max schon für solche gesorgt haben. Schreibe mir bald Ausführlig was deine Beschäftigung ist + will ich hoffen dass du ein brauchbarer Mensch wirst + den Namen Marx Ehre bringst. Jedenfalls ist dir in America hierzu Gelegenheit geboten. Ich bin z.Z. mit der Bilanz beschäftigt + werde dir im nächsten Bf. näheres berichten. Heute habe deinem langen Wunsch Rechnung getragen + den diversen Wust[?] Sch??mann + Pfaff geschrieben + die Sache ins Rollen gebracht. Ich hoffe auch zu einem Ziel zu kommen. Haun Geinsheim, den wir abgeschrieben hatten, bietet ? 1500 ? + hoffe das wir uns einigen. Sonst weiss wenig Neues zu berichten. Soeben habe mit Tante Hans gesprochen + ihr als Grossmutter gratuliert. Am Montag habe ihr eine Kiste voll Kleider, Hemden, etc von dir geschickt. Schreibe ihr gleich deine Adresse, ebenso Rudi. Für heute empfange noch recht herzl. Küsse. Grüsse an Alle Lieben von deinem Vater.

Dear Martin,

Today your second letter was the first to arrive, and we were thrilled to hear that by all appearances, you enjoyed yourself on the voyage and passed the time nicely. The fare you were eating didn't seem to be too bad either. The photos are beautiful, they really made an impression, and I thank you kindly for them. Hopefully you've found good work, or perhaps Max already figured that out for you. Write me soon in detail about your employment. I'm sure that you'll be useful, and bring honor to the name Marx. In any case, you'll have opportunity to do so in America. I'm working on doing the books right now and will go into more detail in the next letter. Today I took into account your long-standing wish, and wrote to the various Wust, Sch??mann, + Pfaff and got the ball rolling on the matter. I hope also to reach a goal. Haun Geinsheim, whom we'd written off, is offering 1500 and I hope we'll be able to come to an agreement. Otherwise there's little new to report, I just spoke with Tante Hans, and congratulated the new grandmother. On Monday I sent her a chest of your clothes, shirts, etc. Write her your address, Rudi too. For today, I send you kisses and greetings to all our loved ones, from your father.
