Letter from Frau Kossmann, Hede, October 26, 1936

Firmenbriefkopf

26. Oktober 1936

Nr. 16

Lieber Martin!

Onkel Sigmund schrieb, ob Vater nach dorten kommen will.

Number 16

Dear Martin,

Have you made yourself comfortable in the new apartment, and how do you feel there? Are you living near nice people? What nationalities are they? Describe your room for us; hopefully you've gotten everything tucked away nicely, close up everything tight so nothing walks away. Do you live far from the Herzes? Don't neglect to visit them, stick with the family! One couldn't make much of the English letter, as it wasn't written very neatly. I helped the Kahns pack, today they're finally done. Karl has a lot of unnecessary stuff, his relatives will be amazed. I baked three times as many confections, but he wasn't able to take them all with; I'll send you more at the next opportunity. On Saturday afternoon we were in Frankfurt. We bought farewell presents for Karl Kahn and Ernst: a wallet for Ernst and an unbreakable plate and mug for Karl. Since Father was in Heidelberg, Hede and I went to Worms; it was really lovely, Rosel and Sig. asked all about you, they send their greetings.

You needn't worry about your father, dear Martin; thanks to God, he's doing well; he just has occasional dizziness, as often happened before, and blood pressure, but everything is in order. Above all, we're all in good health, thanks to God. What else's new? I'm going to Frau Rühl's to try my luck there (by the way, she sends her greetings).

I want, dear Martin, already to wish you the best on your birthday; I hope and wish that you find much happiness in the New World, and that your wish of soon having your father alongside you comes true. Even if you're far from us, we'll commemorate the day. I'll send you something tasty at the next opportunity; my wishes for you are only the best, all the best in the future.

Does any of your friends know that it's your birthday? Celebrate a little!

Oestreich's boy is healthy again, otherwise nothing has happened here. A very happy birthday and warmest greetings,

Johanna Kossmann

Dear Martin,

I hope that you're healthy, I can say that we are. Karl's farewell party was very nice. I was there until 1:30 in the morning, and the next night I wasn't in bed till 11, as we were in Worms. Well dear Martin, I'll send you my birthday greetings for your 25th birthday, and wish you for the future all the best, and hopefully we'll be together next year? Uncle Sigmund wrote, asking if Father wants to come there. Margot Glas came to the hospital today, she has the flu. Aunt Hilda is still in Nierstein, she's staying 8 more days. Friedel Schott is also in bed with strep throat. I told Frau Schott what sort of work you were doing, to which she said, roughly the same as Friedel's work.
