Brief Hede 4. 1. 1937 Deinen lbn. | Gross Gerau, the 4th of January, 1937 Dear Martin, We received your lovely letter today, and were so happy to see in it that you're doing well, something I can also report of us. Were you in Milwaukee with the Kahns over Christmas? How did you like it? Did you also celebrate New Year's right? Betty, Hilde, Friedel and Goldberger were here until around midnight--at midnight we toasted you and drank a bottle and a half of wine with confections and fruit. I really like the pictures you enclosed, especially that of your new scarf, which suits your jacket well. I'm currently having a new dark-blue jacket made in Mainz. Our car is being repaired again right now. While Father and Frau Kossmann were in Schuhmann, I was with Blanka visiting Trude, who really has a pretty blond and blue-eyed baby Ruth. Hertha intends to emigrate to Graz. On New Year's eve, the radio played wonderful English waltzes, which immediately made me think of you. Dear Martin, you wrote about Herbert's address. When I was in Bretten, Tante Hans told me Herbert was still in Paris and wants to relocate there. Since you've been gone, dear Martin, I've not danced in Barbarina or elsewhere. Whom should I go dancing with? Oh well, I think when I get to the U.S., I'll just dance even more. Ferdinand Hirsch of Büttelborn works in a metal shop and earns 16 dollars a week. They're doing great and are feeling well. Yesterday Herr Hartogsohn was here and we gifted him a bread slicing machine as an engagement and wedding present. I am supposed to send greetings from him, and also from Frau Mainzer, who is always asking after you. Father says I should wrap up, as the clock just struck 10, and it could cost extra postage. Now dear Martin, please send my greetings to all the relatives there, and dear Martin, greetings and a kiss for you from your sister Hede. What sort of work are you busy with right now? The youth all send their greetings. I'm not so happy with Trude Kahn right now, as she recently went with Hilde G. to the movies and said nothing about it to me, and then she still didn't want to go out with the color Now just stay healthy and ambitious, so that you can bring father much joy. You must tell yourself: my family must eventually come over to the U.S.A. Warmest greetings and a kiss again from your sister Hede. Do you still visit the Hotel Windermere? Definitely bring it with. |
